The Basics

Sortition is the process of choosing law makers by controlled lottery.

Sortition Ireland is an organisation that promotes Sortition as a political solution for Ireland.

Sortition is not a new idea.

"It is accepted as democratic when public offices are allocated by lot; and as oligarchic when they are filled by election."

"The suffrage by lot is natural to democracy, as that by choice is to aristocracy."

"It will be seen why the drawing of lots is more in the nature of democracy. In an Aristocracy, voting is more appropriate."

Sortition was used in the government of ancient Athens, has been used in the selection of juries for centuries, and has been used in the convening of citizens assemblies in numerous countries in recent years (for example, the Irish Constitutional Convention).

You’re probably thinking: “This is crazy. It would be a disaster. Our current system isn’t great, but its the best we’ve got.”

That’s everyone’s reaction when they first hear about Sortition, but when you get into it in a bit more detail, that view may change. Please read the posts below. They’re very short, and you’ll get through them in 3-4 minutes.

Representative Government? Democracy? Oligarchy?

What is wrong with the current system?

Why is Sortition better than elections?

What if duffers and lunatics get picked?
